New world: why no mounts

    There are pros and cons of mounts in MMORPGs, but Amazon's New World takes a story-driven approach to the subject.

    Almost every MMORPG has popular features in its own genre. Some of these titles have classes while others have general skill trees. One of the most popular aspects of the genre for fans is the accumulation of many unique rideable mounts, as they not only serve as a faster means of transportation but also allow the owner to show off in front of friends and strangers. It has been confirmed that Amazon Games' MMORPG New World will not have rideable mounts. This is an example of New Worlds' bold decision to differentiate itself from its direct competitors.

    There are many arguments for and against mounts in the New World. This decision may discourage some players from trying the game. However, this also applies to players who do not want to try World of Warcraft because there is a subscription and not a one-time purchase in the new world. A number of key design decisions could result in players becoming interested in areas they weren't interested in before or losing interest. It is up to the players to decide which choices they like and which they don't. The lack of rideable mounts in the New World is an example of this polarizing choice.

    Unlike other games in the genre, where players start with a well-defined city, New World plunges players straight into the action. The title aims to be an immersive, action-oriented MMORPG that is further explored through the lack of traditional, locked targets. PvP and PvE are an important part of the gaming experience, and giving players the opportunity to evade impending conflict with mounts seems inconsistent with New World’s vision for Aeternum.

    For many players, realism and immersion can get tiresome at some point. While this mount decision seems to aid the New World plot, walking around can get boring after fully exploring Aeternum. In MMORPGs, mounts have always been a middle ground between walking and traveling fast, and it usually takes some in-game currency like New World coins to buy. When players travel somewhere fast, they may miss out on certain world events and monsters to upgrade their characters. Mounts allow players to move at a remarkable speed while participating in events or battles.

    The main disadvantage of a New World without mounts is that it takes away the possibilities for the players that they actually don't need. Those fans who like to dive into the shipwreck can do so even if they don't touch the mounts at all. However, those who want to take advantage of the convenience of mounts because they only have an hour to spare and don't want to walk all the time are now forced to play the game a certain way. There is no reason why it shouldn't be, aside from potential technical issues with New World.
